How to split screen on a Mac

A Mac can show two apps side by side in a couple of clicks, and Tern can show up to four web pages side by side in a single window. Here are both.

Two windows side by side

  1. 1

    Hover over the green button

It is the third of the three coloured buttons in the top-left corner of a window.
  2. 2

    Choose a side

Under Move & Resize, choose Left or Right. The window fills that half of the screen.
  3. 3

    Fill the other half

Do the same with a second window and choose the other side. Drag the line between them to change the sizes.

Faster ways to tile

Drag to the edge
Drag a window by its title bar to the left or right edge of the screen and let go when the outline appears.
From the keyboard
Hold Fn and Control and press the left or right arrow to send the window to that half.
In full screen
Make one app full screen, open Mission Control, and drag another window onto its thumbnail at the top. The two share the screen until you leave full screen.

Two to four web pages in one window, in Tern

Tiling splits your screen between apps. Tern's split view splits one browser window between pages, so a doc and its preview, or a map and a guide, stay together.

  1. 1

Drag a tab onto the page

Drag a tab from the sidebar onto the left or right half of the page you are reading. Or right-click a link and choose Open Link Beside.
  2. 2

    Choose a layout

Split View › Two, Three or Grid (⌃⌘2, ⌃⌘3, ⌃⌘4) for two, three or four pages.
  3. 3

    Rearrange

Drag a pane by the strip above it onto another pane to swap them. ⇧⌘↩ shows just the focused pane; ⇧⌘\ ends the split.
  4. 4

    Keep the layout

Split View › Save as Desk (⌥⌘S). Reopen it any time with ⌥1 to ⌥9.

Questions

The green button doesn't show Move & Resize
Some apps limit their window size and can only use part of the menu, or none of it. Try another app to check.
Can the agent sit beside my pages?
Yes. Split View › Show Agent in Split (⌥⌘J) puts the Space's agent in a pane of its own.
Does split view work with pinned tabs?
Yes. Any tab in the Space can be a pane, pinned or not.
