Private browsing

A private browser for your Mac, in every Space.

Tern blocks known trackers and ad servers everywhere, keeps each Space's sign-ins apart, and gives you a private window that forgets everything when you close it.

Trackers stop at the door

106,293 trackers and ad servers
Blocked in every Space, checked on your Mac before a page loads them. The list comes with Tern, so nothing about your browsing is sent to check it.
If a site misbehaves
Open the shield in the address bar and let that site through. Settings lists the sites you allowed.

Sign-ins kept apart

Each Space keeps its own
Cookies and logins never cross from one Space to another, so work accounts stay in Work and shopping stays in Home.
Delete a Space, delete its sign-ins
Removing a Space removes its cookies and website data with it.

Open a private window

  1. 1

    Press ⇧⌘P

Or choose File › New Private Window.
  2. 2

    Browse as usual

Nothing the window does is written to disk: no history, no cookies, no cache.
  3. 3

    Close it

Everything from that window is gone the moment it closes.

Questions

Does Tern track me?
Tern has no account and no ads. It sends anonymous usage counts only if you say yes, and crash reports only if you turn them on. The privacy page lists every time it goes online.
Is private browsing the same as being anonymous?
No browser makes you anonymous on its own. A private window keeps your Mac clean and blocking keeps trackers out; the sites you visit and your network still see your connection.
