Updated 24 October 2026 · Tern 0.2.0

Your browsing stays on your Mac.

Tern has no account, no ads and no analytics. Here is exactly what it keeps, what leaves your Mac, and when.

No account No analytics or tracking Nothing used to train models

Kept on your Mac

Stored in your user folder and never sent anywhere by Tern.

Spaces and tabs
Your Spaces, tabs, pinned tabs, folders, Desks and settings.
History
The pages you visit, so the command bar can find them again.
Sign-ins
Cookies and website data, kept apart for each Space. Deleting a Space deletes its sign-ins.
Agent conversations
What you asked each Space's agent and what it did.
Downloads
Saved to your Downloads folder.
Blocking
The list of trackers and ad servers comes with Tern, so checking a page against it never leaves your Mac. So do the sites where you turned blocking off.

Sent to Anthropic, only when you ask

The agent runs on Claude. When you ask it something, Tern sends Anthropic what it needs to answer, using your own API key.

What's sent
Your request, and the text and screenshots of pages the agent reads in that Space.
What isn't
Other Spaces, your history, and anything while you don't use the agent.
Your API key
Kept in your Keychain and sent only to Anthropic.
Passwords and cards
The agent never types them, even with your OK.

Anthropic handles these requests under its privacy policy and doesn't train its models on API data by default.

The few times Tern goes online for itself

Updates
Once a day Tern asks GitHub whether there's a new version. GitHub sees your IP address, as with any download. No details about your Mac are sent.
Crash reports
Off unless you turn them on in Settings › Privacy. Then, when Tern crashes or hangs, the report macOS makes is sent to Front Tribe: where in Tern it happened, Tern's version and the version of macOS. No pages, addresses or anything you typed.
Site icons
Tern fetches each site's icon from the site itself, as a browser does when you visit.
Import
Bringing your old browser over happens on your Mac. macOS asks first before Tern can read another browser's open tabs.

Clear it whenever you like

Everything above can be removed from Tern itself.
